Population Pyramid

Population Pyramid

Today we watched the population pyramid and discussed what it was about. Some facts about the population pyramid are, they are divided by male and female, the youngest age starts at the bottom (0 to 4) and the oldest age is at the top (100+). We also talked about having a population of mostly younger means in the future your population will grow, for example Rwanda's populations is made up mostly younger aged people so as time goes on their population will grow. We also talked about how almost all African countries have a high percentage of people who are young, so their population will grow as well. Two important definitions we discussed are;

1. Industrial Society- makes their economy on machines, makes things like cars, washers, dryers. They make lots of money and buys lots of stuff.

2. Pre-Industrial Society- makes living off plants and crops, does not make lots of money.

Continuing on with class we talked about when population goes up, life expectancy goes up and child mortality goes down. We also looked at Japan's population of pyramid and talked about how most of their population is older therefore when time goes on population will decrease because there will be few percentage of people producing children. Then we answered four questions on the population pyramid.

*4 factors that can alter a trend represented by a population pyramid are:
- Industrialization
-Natural Disasters
-Education of Women
-War

*As a country slows in population growth, its pyramid will become more rectangular
*A population pyramid gives you information about birth rates, actual number of people, and death rates.
* If your in an advanced a state of industrialization the characteristics would be low birth rate, low death rate, stable population, good living conditions and long life expectancy.

CIA World Factbook

CIA World Factbook

Yesterday in class people in the class shared the interesting facts that they found on the CIA World Factbook site. Some of the countries that were discussed were Timor Leste, Russia, United States, North Korea, Syria, and Japan. The first fact that was shared was about the percent of people in certain countires that have HIV/AIDS. We found that the top 20 countries with the highest percent were from Africa. We had a class discussion about why that was and we said overall it was because Africa doesn't have lots of present technology and there people are not educated on the subject. One of the other facts that was presented was about the country of Timor Leste. We found that about 1,000,000 million people are living in Timor Leste and we also discussed their land use. There is 10% arable land and 4% permanent crops. Which means about 85% of their land is unable to be used. One of the facts that I found was that the country of Cambodia has a 0% percent unemployment rate, which is very interesting. These are only some of the interesting facts that were found on CIA World Factbook and I'm sure there are many more to be found.

Class on 9/25/14

Class on 9/25/14

Today we started our class off with Mr. Schick and Cody in a rap battle. Mr. Schick tried to rap but forgot what he was going to say and Cody attempted while others in the class tried to create a beat. After we all finished laughing we started class. We finished going over the last two short answer questions about Socrates trial and death, and globalization and tried to catch up the people who were absent because of the freshman retreat yesterday. While people were taking notes on the things they should have included in their response, Mr. Schick talked about Socrates and his trial. He said that Socrates was so smart he probably could have said something(lying) that would have gotten him charged not guilty. After we finished talking about Socrates and his death and trial we talked about the last question on globalization. It especially helped me a lot going over these questions in great detail so I know what I can do better next time.

Class on 9/24/14

I forgot to post this yesterday, so I'm posting it today.

Yesterday in class we got our unit one tests back. When Mr. Schick gave them back if you got an A you got a ding(on his bell) and if you didn't get a ding you didn't get an A. We went over the answers to the unit one test and corrected all of the questions we got wrong, so we can study them in the future for the semester exam because there is no way we are going to be able to remember the things we learned from the beginning of the semester. We had a little discussion on each of the questions so that we knew why a certain answer was the correct answer which really helps, especially for me to know why I got a question wrong. We also carefully went over the first two short answer/BCR questions, so we know what needed to be included in each of the responses in order to get a perfect score. Towards the end of class we were informed that out of all Mr. Schick's classes we had the highest test average, which was great to hear.

Class on 9/18/14

Class on 9/18/14

Today in class we started a new unit called Population and Migration. We learned that over 7 billion people live on the planet, that is about 73 million people per year. 90% of this population growth takes place in developing countries of Africa, South and East Asia, and Latin America. We also learned that developing countries mean countries are still developing their economy and technology etc... Some of the statistics that we learned were it took 10,000 years to hit 1 billion people. It took 33 years to hit 3 billion people. It took 13 years to hit 5 billion people, and 12 years to hit 7 billion people. We also talked about life expectancy and why women have a higher life expectancy then men. Women have a higher life expectancy then men because men hold tougher jobs. For example lumberjack, military, professional football player etc... It was found that in the U.S. men have an average 76.05 years and women have 81.05 years. Overall it was a productive class today.

Class on 9/17/14

Class on 9/17/14

Today in class we took are Chapter Test. Considering the amount of time we were given yesterday to prepare for the test I felt pretty prepared. I really liked the fact that we could use our blogs for the test because there was one or two questions I got stuck on and my blog saved me. I thought I took good notes, however I think I need to take more notes during class discussions and be more detailed with my notes. Although it wasn't planned I think the marching band helped as well, as they were practicing, because music helps me focus. After I finished the test, I got Mr. Schick to sign my Freshman Retreat form and worked on my blog for today.Even though it was an overall stressful day taking four tests, I am glad I was able to finish and feel confident about it.

Class on 9/16/14

Class on 9/16/14

Today in class we had a sub because Mr. Schick had a meeting, so we were allowed to study for our test tomorrow. I made a quizlet account and made flashcards, took multiple tests, etc... I am very glad we had this time to study because I feel like this helped me better understand what the test was going to  be on and prepare for it.  It was also good to have time to study because it helped me know how I might do on the test tomorrow. The test is on a message to Garcia, ancient Greece, Did you Know 3.0 and globalization. Everyone was working quietly and was on task from what I could see, which made it much easier to study. Overall I thought it was a very productive class, and helpful to prepare for the test tomorrow.

Class on 9/12/14

Class on 9/12/14

Yesterday in class we talked about Globalization, globalization is the connection of different parts of the world. Globalization results in the expansion of international cultural, economic, and political activities. For example Japan has the highest life expectancy rate, because of globalization that has gone down because places like McDonalds and KFC are showing up and causing more health issues. Another example would be The Silk Road. The Silk Road is used for the transportation of goods and is still used today but, because of globalization it is used less because now we can use a mailing system and send what ever we need to around the world and faster. Lastly we talked about the picture of the Kenyan on the cell phone. We discussed what kinds of things we need in order to operate a cell phone and that would be cell phone service, electricity, money, a place to buy the cell phone etc... so globalization is in effect there with getting cell phones and being able to operate them. Therefore these examples so that globalization is expanding all over the world and rapidly.

Did You Know Reactions

Did you Know Reactions

Fact: If Facebook were a country it would be the third largest country behind China and India.
My initial reaction to what I saw was is there really that many people on Facebook? Since both China and India have over 1 billion people living there. These changes are manifesting in my personal life because Facebook is how I connect with my friends that live in another country, so it's just crazy to think that are about 1 billion possible people that could friend me on Facebook. Technology plays an important role in my life because that is how I communicate with friends that live far away or people that I don't get to see as often. Of course there are other ways of communicating with them but using technology like cell phone or a computer just make it easier.

Fact: There are 31 billion searches on Google every month.
My initial reaction to what I saw was I absolutely believe it. I cannot count how many times I hear someone say "Just Google it," in a day. These changes make an impact in my life because instead of going to the library and doing research on something to answer a simple question, you can just type your question in and within two seconds you can find and answer. It is very helpful and makes projects sometimes much easier than going to the library to research something.

The number of text messages sent and received everyday, exceeds the total population of the planet.
My first initial reaction to this was to figure out how many people there are in the world. There are about 7.046 billion people in the world which means that more then 7.046 text messages are sent and received, that is a huge amount of text messages. But at the same time I also believe it because I have seen my friends send the most pointless text messages, or send texts to someone who is right next to them. This impacts my life because text messages is how I communicate with my parents to pick me up from practice, or my friends if I need help with homework, so to me text messaging is important and greatly effects my life.

Class on 9/5/14

Class on 9/5/14

On Friday in class we finished talking about the last two vocab words, The Death of Socrates and What it meant if someone called you an idiot.

The Death Of Socrates-
500 people voted on his verdict
Guards and Friends had set up an escape plan, but Socrates refused saying he was a citizen of Athens and he would respect the decision.
Socrates was viewed as on of Greece's great heroes, he talked the talk and walked the walk.

What it meant if someone called you an idiot-
It meant someone who does not participate in politics and someone who lacks professional skill. If you were called an idiot that was a big insult.

We also talked about a famous quote by Socrates, "The unexamined life is not worth living."
That means that nothing else in the world has the mental capacity that humans do so we should use that gift that we were given.

After that we had an interesting discussion on Hitler. We talked about it how it was a shame his body could not be recovered because it would have been interesting to see if he had any mental disabilities.  We also wondered if he had gotten into art school, if he would not have killed all those Jewish people. All good questions but unfortunately none of them could be answered.

What We did in Class on 9/2/14

What We did in Class on 9/2/14

To start off class today Mr. Schick took attendance and then helped anyone that still needed help with their blog. We then talked about the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and watched Mr. Schick's video. After that we talked about A Message to Garcia. Back during the Spanish American War, President McKinley need to send a message to a man named Garcia who was in Cuba at the time. A man Rowan was called upon to deliver this important message to Garcia. The moral of this story was to "Just do it," Rowan did not ask any questions about delivering this message he just got it done. Now, if you asked someone to do something for you they would ask a lot of questions instead of just getting it done. After we discussed A Message to Garcia we added it to are links section of our blog. The last 5-10 minutes of class we just talked with the people sitting around us.
