North Korea Test and Last Human Geo Class

North Korea Test

Yesterday in class we took a test on North Korea and it was the last Human Geo class ever:( I really enjoyed this class this semester, overall I have to say it was my favorite class. Mr. Schick is a great teacher and I'm really glad that I have him for Western Civ and that I get to stay with mostly the same class. Back to the North Korea test,  I got an 100% :) I'm really glad that I could end the semester on a good note. The test was pretty easy, especially since Mr.Schick went over the toughest parts of it before the test started. Overall our class had the highest average of all Mr. Schick's classes which I think was the case the entire semester. After we took the test we all had cookies and just kind of hung out. Mr.Schick also showed us who was going to be leaving our class and who was going to be joining our class. I think overall it will be a good class even though it won't quite be the same. So thank you to everyone who made this semester a memorable one and hopefully we will have a great second semester!

Professor Karson and Heated Class Discussion

Professor Karson and Heated Class Discussion

Today in class Mr.Hollin came in to observe, and Proffesor Karson taught class today. We went over previous material on North Korea in order to review for our test tomorrow. However in class today we had one of our infamous class discussions. The topic that was being debated was the nuking of North Korea. Cody, Zack, Steven, and Adam believe that it would be ok to nuke Pyongyang the capital of North Korea. However, they didn't really see that if the United States were to do that it would kill 3.2 million people who are harmless to the United States. Even though the leaders of North Korea are the real issue, not the people. My opinion of the subject took me a while to think about but I came up with this: The North Korean people are like 2 year olds, they don't know any better and what they do know, they learned from their parents or in this case their corrupt government. So imagine some one killing someones children because they didn't agree or like that person's parenting style. So now that I put it that way do you still agree with nuking North Korea? The people should not be held accountable for the leadership of North Korea, and therefore I do not agree with Cody, Zack, Steven or Adam because killing innocent people is morally wrong no matter who they are. We pretty much ended class with the discussion and we will be taking the test on North Korea tomorrow.

North Korean Leadership

North Korean Leadership

Today in class we took notes and discussed North Korean Leadership. The first president of North Korea was Kim Il Sung, he ruled from 1948 to 1994. However he wasn't president the whole time he was the Prime Minister from 1948-1972 and he was president from 1972- until death in 1994. After Kim Il Sung died his son Kim Jong Il took over, he ruled from 1994-2011. Mr. Schick told us some of the things that kids learned in school about Kim Jong Il, for example he started walking when he was three weeks old and starting talking a eight weeks old. Which is absolutely impossible, but that's what the people believe, and nobody can tell them differently. Therefore I googled more "facts" about Kim Jong Il and found that he also bowled a perfect 300 the first time he ever bowled and that he claimed to invent the hamburger. However, when Kim Jong Il died his son Kim Jong Un took his place ruling over North Korea. Many thought that he would be the one to turn things around for North Korea because he has been out of the country and was a fan of Michael Jordan, the NBA and computer games. Unfortunately, that has not been the case a couple months after taking he threatened the United States with an attack and killed many of his fathers hearse carriers. Which included his uncle and lost of his family. After discussing North Korean Leadership we starting talking about the NPT which is the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty which basically means they won't use the nuclear weapons on people, they won't make any more, and they will dismantle some of the them . The countries that are included in this treaty are the United States, Russia, United Kingdom, France and China. Tomorrow we will review for the test on North Korea.

North Korean Doctumentary Day 2

North Korean Documentary Day 2

Today in class we finished watching the North Korean documentary. We left off when the camera crew and reporter visited one of the blind patients house. They went into the house and there were no family pictures, or any pictures for that matter except for their leaders. They couldn't ask questions about the leaders, but they careful asked questions to the family about life with blindness. After a few questions they watched a performance by the granddaughter of the patient. After that the documentary went in to talking about "Juche" which is the government's philosophy that Kim il Sung implemented. "Juche" means up yours but to put in better terms it means that they are self reliant and that they don't need anybody else. Other major points in the documentary were when they talked about concentration camps. When a person commits a crime in North Korea their family is sent to a concentration camp. Food and supplies are scarce and you never leave, you stay basically until you die. There was a previous guard of Camp 22 on the documentary that explained how the camp worked and the kinds of things he saw in the camp, and he was able to escape through China. Then there was a scene where one of the North Korean border patrol escaped through the electric fence into South Korea. The last thing they showed in the documentary was what happened after performing the cataract surgeries. After the bandages were taking off the people thanked their great leaders for their eye sight, when really it was the doctors that performed the surgeries. I thought that wasn't quite right, but then again what is right about North Korea?  After the video we discussed the end of the quarter which is Friday, and what our grades look like. That was all for class today.

North Korean Documentary

North Korean Documentary

Today in class we started watching a documentary on North Korea. I have already watched this video before, back in my sixth grade social studies class. This video gave me nightmares back in sixth grade so watching it again for the first time since then was very interesting. Since then I have learned more about North Korea and how life is there. However, there are a few things that I picked up on watching it this time. For example, in the video it said after The Korean War, no peace treaty was signed so therefore the war is still technically going on, and North Korea still thinks their in control. One of the statistics that was mentioned in the video was that in the 1990's there was a famine and it killed about 4 million people, (that's about 10% of the population) and North Korea wouldn't accept any aid. That last interesting statistic that was mentioned is that the average 7 year old is 8 inches shorter and 22 pounds lighter than the average 7 year old in South Korea. That just shows how poor the nutrition is in North Korea. That was where we stopped today and we will continue to watch the documentary on Tuesday.

Teacher Cody

Teacher Cody

Today in class Mr. Schick's daughter observed our Human Geography class and we review information on North Korea. After Mr. Schick introduced his daughter she took a class picture of us in front of the chalkboard "looking at our future." After the pictures was appointed to teach class today, so we reviewed the North Korea powerpoint on the things we talked about in class yesterday, while Cody was cracking jokes and Adam and Zach kept asking Professor Cody questions. I wouldn't say it was a productive class, but it wasn't a total waste either. It was a good time though, lots of laughs. Once Professor Cody was finished Mr. Schick talked to us about an extra credit opportunity this weekend. In order to receive extra credit we have to attend the Pow Wow that Mr. Scholl, has spent lots of his time putting together, and organizing. Apparently, it's supposed to be pretty interesting so maybe I will check it out and get some extra credit.

North Korea

North Korea

Today in class we started discussing North Korea and what we kind of already know regarding the country and the people's way of life. North Korea runs an oppressive government, and they are very secluded and isolated from the world. Their leader is Kim Jong-Un, and he clearly didn't like the movie put out The Interview. An oppressive government is a state run socialist government that many consider to be a Stalinist dictatorship. Their official name is Democratic People's Republic of Korea(DPRK) they claim to be the ruler of the entire Korean peninsula. North Korea is isolated by the government and they are isolated geographically. Pyongyang is the capital of North Korea and is located at 39 degrees north latitude, Bel Air MD is also located at 39 degrees north. The demilitarized zone (DMZ) is the border between North and South Korea. That was as far as we got with the notes, and we will continue tomorrow.
